Impact Volunteer Service Plan

Public Safety: It’s Everyone’s Responsibility

Summary:

Flint’s top two priorities are public safety and economic development. This service plan is designed to focus on creating a community of residents, organizations and partners that embodies the notion that public safety is everyone’s responsibility. The plan’s goal is to engage volunteers in neighborhood revitalization and blight elimination initiatives by strengthening the Blue Badge Volunteer Corps’ capacity, implementing Blight Elimination Service Teams and promoting service as a core part of what it means to be a citizen in Flint.

The objectives are to:

• Establish sustainable Blue Badge Volunteer Corps staffing and network structure to support impact volunteering.
• Increase the number of block clubs, crime watch and neighborhood groups engaging in public safety and neighborhood revitalization.
• Provide training and technical assistance on  the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) framework to community leaders and groups.
• Apply for Cities of Service Impact Funds grant and other resources to implement the Love your Block Strategy Blueprint.
• Create, working with the City’s Legal Department, a cadre of civilian volunteer blight officers.
• Develop a collaborative strategy with other volunteer stakeholders to recruit, connect, retain and utilize Flint public safety volunteers effectively and efficiently.
• Develop and implement practices to recognize all public safety volunteer efforts throughout the year.
